Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo Boycotts COP29 in Baku Over Azerbaijani Aggression and Occupation of Artsakh

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has announced her decision not to attend the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, citing the Azerbaijani government’s involvement in the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Artsakh in September 2023.

Hidalgo conveyed her stance during the annual dinner of the Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations in France (CCAF) held on Wednesday. Jean-Christophe Buisson, Deputy Director of Le Figaro Magazine, reported on the event, highlighting Hidalgo’s firm stand against the Azerbaijani regime.

Despite her strong ecological commitment, Hidalgo emphasized her refusal to participate in COP29 as a form of protest against Azerbaijan’s actions in Artsakh. The mayor’s decision shows her unwavering support for human rights and condemnation of ethnic cleansing, signaling a principled stance on environmental diplomacy.

The CCAF annual dinner served as a platform for Hidalgo to voice her concerns, with various politicians and public figures in attendance. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal represented the President at the event, showing the significance of Hidalgo’s statement within the political landscape of France.

Hidalgo’s decision not only reflects her personal convictions but also carries broader implications for international relations. By boycotting COP29 in Baku, she amplifies the voice of Artsakh residents affected by human rights violations and sends a clear message of solidarity with the Armenian community.
