Peru to lead regional group at UN Human Rights Council
Peru will be in charge of the general coordination of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States at the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2022.
The South American country takes on this important responsibility as a sign of its firm commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, international human rights law, and multilateralism.
As his first act in the general coordination, Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ambassador Luis Chuquihuara, received the visit from the newly elected President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Federico Villegas of Argentina.
The permanent representatives agreed on the importance of working together to give renewed impetus to the role of the region in the principal body of the United Nations entrusted with the promotion and protection of human rights.
The UN Human Rights Council focuses particularly on issues such as the fight against poverty and social exclusion, women's rights and gender equality, as well as the rights of indigenous peoples and persons of African descent.
